Fine Art Photo at Lutsen Resort

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

I was recently informed that the following photograph I took at the Lutsen Resort was selected to be displayed in the Superior Ballroom. I had submitted it for a contest earlier in the year, and I am excited to see it the next time we visit Minnesota’s North Shore.

UPDATE: I also found out that they used a picture of the wedding party skipping rocks that I photographed in their current brochure! Here is a photo of it that I just took with my iPhone.

Fine Art Photos: Minnesota’s North Shore

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Every time we travel along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, I am reminded of how beautiful it is. This was our first trip in the Spring, and I really enjoyed photographing the rivers full with snow runoff. It was also very cool to see some remnants of ice from this winter.

This week’s Fine Art Photo of the Week is an HDR image of part of the gorge that the Temperance River cuts through the earth on its way to Lake Superior. I was struck by the sunlight hitting the icicle as the water rushed in shadow below. Since cameras cannot capture the range of light that our eyes can see, I knew that I would have to take multiple exposures of the scene and combine it in Photoshop to recapture what I saw (7 stops difference between the sun on the icicle and the shadowy water below).

Those of you who know me well realize I am not much of a morning person. But the crisp air and beautiful sunrise of the first morning certainly woke me up! We stayed in Tofte, MN, so the Temperance River was close by. The first picture shows a great old tree leaning over the river, and the following pictures are along the shore where the river meets Lake Superior.

These last bonus images are of some falls along the Cascade River (top) and of Caribou Falls (middle and bottom). You can’t really see the rainbow that was produced at the bottom of Caribou Falls, so I zoomed in on it for the last picture.

Fine Art Photo: High Falls of the Pigeon River

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

We are so lucky to be on a trip along Minnesota’s North Shore this week, which will end with a wedding that we are photographing at the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, MN. The fall colors are absolutely beautiful, so I know that there are more pictures that will be worthy to post, but for now I hope you enjoy this image of Pigeon Falls from Grand Portage State Park. This is also the my first high-dynamic range (HDR) photograph.

My Photo in an Alumni Art Show

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Through May 14, you can see the following photo, which I made while traveling along the North Shore, in the Student & Alumni Art Exhibition at the Worthington campus of MN West Community & Technical College. It was on this campus that I sold my first fine art photograph, and it is also where I had my first solo art exhibition.

The closing reception is Friday, May 14 from 4–6 pm. Stop by and enjoy the artwork!

Starry Night Self Portrait

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Ever since I fell in love with photography as a high school sophomore, it has been my dream to have a photo published in National Geographic magazine. Now you can help make that dream come true (how often can you say that?). And it’s really easy: all you have to do is vote for my photograph by clicking here. The photo (seen below) can be found in “Week 2.” Whichever photo has the highest rating when the voting ends on April 1st will be published.

I took this self portrait with my wife Lisa in Arizona when we visited my grandma in 2009. We both love stargazing, because it reminds us of our first date watching the Leonid meteorite shower. This picture also reminds me of Van Gogh’s Starry Night and other nocturnal paintings. Thank you for voting!

Minnesota’s North Shore

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Since we were up in Lutsen, MN for a Jesse Valley Photography wedding, we booked a room for an extra day to hike along the North Shore and take some photos. The weather was amazing for the end of September, and the scenery was breathtaking. These are just a few of the images I made, but I will have them and some more for sale at the studio and in an online gallery at (click the “Fine Art” link).

Lisa and I also took photos during this trip for the next installment of our Jesse vs Lisa Shoot Outs. Look for that to be published soon.

If you ever get the chance to visit MN’s North Shore in autumn, I highly recommend it.

Fine Art Photo of the Week XIV

Friday, September 18th, 2009

We went through Duluth, MN on the way to photograph a wedding in Lutsen, MN. We made time to stop and take a few pictures on this lovely fall day.

Lisa and Jesse go to Hot-lanta.

But it isn’t really all that hot! However it’s warmer and nicer weather than in Minnesota!

Yesterday, we ventured to the neighborhood of Virginia Highland (armed with a recommendation from our hotel’s concierge). There was a small farmers-market style art fair that we happened upon. We love original artwork! There was even an artist (Julie Ross) who featured miniature art that reminded us of our friend William Hessian’s miniature works.

We strolled the neighborhood, admiring the bungalow style homes and eclectic style shoppes. It reminded us of Minneapolis’ Linden Hills neighborhood, but on a larger scale.

Best of all, it is spring here in Atlanta! I’m posting some photos of the beautiful blooming trees. The two last photos are in downtown Atlanta.
