The Weasel with a Mouse in its Mouth

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

I was at Westwood Nature Center in St. Louis Park enjoying a walk in the warm March weather.  While standing on the boardwalk, I heard some rustling in the reeds. A weasel appeared. He looked me straight in the eyes, as if to greet me and ran right toward me! I was able to take a picture before he jumped off the boardwalk.

In his haste to get away, he dropped his mouse and kept on running. I thought I wouldn’t see him again, but I guess he was hungry. He popped up his head on the other side of the boardwalk. And he paused to check me out. I pointed my lens on the mouse and took a portrait when he collected his prize.

We’ve had some absolutely gorgeous weather this past week, and it definitely has me itching for Spring! And apparently I’m not the only one—I spied this robin checking out the art in the Walker Sculpture Garden.

Starry Night Self Portrait

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Ever since I fell in love with photography as a high school sophomore, it has been my dream to have a photo published in National Geographic magazine. Now you can help make that dream come true (how often can you say that?). And it’s really easy: all you have to do is vote for my photograph by clicking here. The photo (seen below) can be found in “Week 2.” Whichever photo has the highest rating when the voting ends on April 1st will be published.

I took this self portrait with my wife Lisa in Arizona when we visited my grandma in 2009. We both love stargazing, because it reminds us of our first date watching the Leonid meteorite shower. This picture also reminds me of Van Gogh’s Starry Night and other nocturnal paintings. Thank you for voting!
