Fine Art Photos: Mallards

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

This is a special installment of my Fine Art Photo of the Week especially for fans of mallards. Spring is here and the mating race is on, which is a great time to photograph water fowl. The first image (my actual photo of the week) was taken with a Lensbaby Composer and the Pinhole/Zone Plate optic. It is definitely one of my favorite lenses for experimentation and creative image making.

The conditions were good for me to take some other great shots of the mallards that were flying around Westwood Nature Center. Enjoy these bonus images:

Fine Art Photo of the Week XXXVXIV

Friday, May 7th, 2010

I knew that the approaching storm would bring some unique photo opportunities, so I set out to Westwood Nature Center in my bright orange raincoat. When I came upon the turkeys, I started taking photos of them. As I raised my camera and took the first few clicks, this tom put up his display. I noticed that he kept checking me out and would go into full display when I took his portrait.

I think that he thought I was a rival turkey, and whenever I raised my arm that I was displaying my “orange feathers” and challenging him. It was a very unique encounter. After a few more shots I left him alone with all the females.

This photo was taken shortly after my five year wedding anniversary, and it reminds me of marriage. I hope you like it.

The Weasel with a Mouse in its Mouth

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

I was at Westwood Nature Center in St. Louis Park enjoying a walk in the warm March weather.  While standing on the boardwalk, I heard some rustling in the reeds. A weasel appeared. He looked me straight in the eyes, as if to greet me and ran right toward me! I was able to take a picture before he jumped off the boardwalk.

In his haste to get away, he dropped his mouse and kept on running. I thought I wouldn’t see him again, but I guess he was hungry. He popped up his head on the other side of the boardwalk. And he paused to check me out. I pointed my lens on the mouse and took a portrait when he collected his prize.

We’ve had some absolutely gorgeous weather this past week, and it definitely has me itching for Spring! And apparently I’m not the only one—I spied this robin checking out the art in the Walker Sculpture Garden.

Fine Art Photo of the Week

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Everywhere I go, my camera tags along. I take hundreds of pictures, some no one ever sees—which is sad. Thus the birth of a new feature for my blog. This is the premier post of the fine art photo of the week! Each week I will post a new photo and brief caption.

Yesterday, on the warmest day in close to six months, I went to the local nature center (Westwood) to capture spring. I photographed many birds and new buds, but what really captured my interest was the wild turkeys. I saw a large tom strutting about in full display to a group of females who paid him little attention. Spring is certainly in the air!
